Below is a question I was asked when I mentioned what I do to a couple of women at a book launch party last weekend. The strategies I’ve listed below are many of the same things I practice myself, so, I know they work.

Question: As a bookstore owner, mom, and fledgling author, I constantly find myself juggling multiple tasks and experiencing brain fog. How can I stay sharp and maintain focus with such a demanding schedule?

Answer: Balancing the demands of entrepreneurship while maintaining mental sharpness can be a real challenge. Here are some strategies to help you stay sharp and focused:

Prioritize Deep Work

Dedicate uninterrupted blocks of time to focus on your most important tasks. Eliminate distractions, set specific goals, and immerse yourself fully in the task at hand. This practice allows you to harness your cognitive abilities to their fullest potential.

Take Regular Breaks

It may seem counterintuitive, but taking breaks actually improves productivity and mental clarity. Incorporate short breaks throughout your day to recharge your brain. Engage in activities like stretching, going for a walk, or practicing mindfulness to refresh your mind and enhance focus.

Delegate and Outsource

Recognize that you don’t have to do everything on your own. Delegate tasks that can be handled by others, and outsource certain responsibilities to free up mental space for critical decision-making and high-value activities.

Practice Stress Management

Chronic stress can take a toll on your mental sharpness. Implement stress management techniques, such as regular exercise, deep breathing exercises, or meditation, to reduce stress levels and promote mental well-being.

Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Physical well-being is closely linked to mental acuity. Ensure you’re getting enough sleep, eating a balanced diet, and engaging in regular exercise. These lifestyle choices provide the foundation for optimal cognitive functioning.

Recipe of the Week: Eat Yourself Smart

Each week I include a recipe which shows how to harness the power of food to improve well-being and deal with common health concerns.

Brainiac Brunch Delight

Servings: 2

Calories per Serving: 350

Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup cooked quinoa
  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 avocado, sliced
  • 1 cup arugula leaves
  • 1/4 cup walnuts, chopped
  • 1/4 cup blueberries
  • 1 tablespoon extra-virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

  1. Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the cooked quinoa to the skillet and sauté for 2-3 minutes until heated through.
  3. Push the quinoa to one side of the skillet and crack the eggs on the other side.
  4. Cook the eggs to your desired doneness (e.g., sunny-side-up, over-easy, or scrambled).
  5. Season the quinoa and eggs with salt and pepper.
  6. Divide the eggs between two plates.
  7. Top the eggs with the cooked quinoa and spinach leaves.
  8. Arrange avocado slices, walnuts, and blueberries on top.
  9. Sprinkle with an additional pinch of salt and pepper, if desired.

Serve the Brainiac Brunch Delight warm and enjoy!
